Wild day on Wall Street finishes with Dow up more than 260 points

Following Wednesday’s 1,000-point surge, stocks Thursday plummeted as much as 600 points. Then they came roaring back. At the end of the day, the Dow was up more than 260 points. The S&P 500 and Nasdaq also turned early losses into gains. But all three major indexes remain down more than 9 percent for December.
