Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund Calls for Applying “Clyburn Standard” to All Members of Congress

Atlanta, GA – Statement from Tea Party Patriots Citizens Fund Chairman Jenny Beth Martin:

“It was South Carolina Representative James Clyburn, the Democratic whip at the time, who famously said, ‘Silence is consent. We cannot be silent in this matter, because we do not consent to the conduct.’ That was after Republican Congressman Joe Wilson (R-S.C.) accused President Obama of lying back in 2009. Mr. Wilson apologized. When Democratic leaders such as Speaker Pelosi, Majority Leader Hoyer and, yes, Mr. Clyburn himself, are silent about the repulsive words of their own freshman members, they are giving their consent. It is time for Democratic leadership to apply the ‘Clyburn Standard’ to Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib and the rest of their own members. Ms. Tlaib owes the President a full and meaningful apology, and if Speaker Pelosi and others won’t publicly and emphatically call for that, then there’s no reason to take them seriously about anything.”
