When looking at this issue, it's important to look into what a background check actually does. A background check simply determines whether or not an individual is legally able to purchase or possess a firearm. This means they look at things like criminal history, past drug use, dishonorable military discharges, open warrants, history of violence, and yes, your mental health history.

A background check is able to make an assumption about your future behaviors based on your past behaviors, but it does NOT determine a person's intent or control somebody's actions.
